북아프리카-유럽 간 해상에서 수십명 이주민 구출

모로코 해군이 북아프리카와 유럽 사이의 지중해 해상에서 발견된 조난당한 배에서 53명의 이주민을 구출했습니다. 배 안에는 4명의 사람이 죽은 채 발견되었고 적어도 한명이 익사한 것으로 밝혀졌습니다. 발견 당시 배는 모로코 북부지역의 Dar Kebdani 마을에서 수킬로미터 떨어져 있었다고 유엔난민기구(UNHCR)에서 발표했습니다.

배에 타고 있던 이들 중에는 열살 미만의 아동들도 몇 명 있었으며 임산부들도 있었습니다. 죽은 채 발견된 이들 중 한 콩고 여성과 그의 딸의 신원이 밝혀진 상태인데, 이 둘은 등록된 난민이였습니다. 배에 타고 있던 사람들에 의하면, 한 콩고 난민 청년이 익사하였지만 시체를 찾지 못했다고 했습니다.

최근 지중해에서는 또한 80명을 태우고 그리스로 향하던 두 척의 배가 해상에서 일주일동안 떠돌다가 이탈리아 해안경비대에 의해 구출되었습니다. 배에 타고 있던 대부분의 사람들은 아프가니스탄 출신으로 식량과 물이 떨어져 탈수 상태로 발견되었습니다.

UNHCR에 의하면, 지난 주말에 리비아에서 출발한 배가 말타 군에 의해 구출되었는데 이 배는 44명의 사람들을 싣고 있었고 대부분이 소말리아 출신이였습니다. 리비아 해안경비대는, 최근에 최대 400여명의 사람들이 리비아 해안 근처에서 구출된 바 있다고 발표했습니다. UNHCR은, 리비아가 유럽으로 향하는 난민들과 이주민들의 이주 루트로 다시 각광받고 있다고 밝혔습니다.

UN REPORTS SCORES OF MIGRANTS RESCUED AT SEA BETWEEN NORTH AFRICA AND EUROPE  New York, Dec  6 2011  4:05PM  The United Nations refugee agency <“http://www.unhcr.org/4ede1e7e6.html“>said today it has received information that the Moroccan navy rescued 53 people on board a stricken vessel in the Mediterranean Sea, adding that four people were found dead in the boat, while at least one person is known to have drowned.

The boat was found a few kilometres offshore from the town of Dar Kebdani in northern Morocco last week, according to Melissa Fleming, spokesperson for the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) in Geneva.

Among the passengers were several children under the age of 10 and a number of pregnant women. The dead included a Congolese woman and her daughter, who were identified in the morgue by UNHCR staff. They were both registered refugees. The passengers said that a Congolese refugee, a young man, is known to have drowned, but has not been recovered.

In a separate incident, two boats carrying 80 people which set sail from Greece were rescued by the Italian coastguard yesterday after a week at sea. The passengers – mainly Afghans – were found dehydrated, having run out of food and water, Ms. Fleming said.

UNHCR has also been informed that a boat that departed from Libya last weekend was rescued by the Maltese armed forces and found to have been carrying 44 people, many of them Somalis.

The Libyan coast guard has reported that up to 400 people have been rescued from boats off the country’s coast in recent days. Migrants and refugees are once again attempting to use Libya as a transit route to Europe, according to UNHCR.
